Ancient Street

Ancient Street. Walking down from here to the Old Street of Hexia Ancient Town, you can see ancient buildings on both sides of the street. The government has restored the ancient buildings according to the principle of restoring the old as the old. Hexia came into being in the late period of the Spring and Autumn Period when the Hangou Canal was built upon the order of King Fuchai of Wu. Hexia has a history of more than 2,500 years. Hexia was an important port for grain and salt transportation along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in history. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, as to say, created advantageous geographical conditions for Hexia to become a political and economic center in the northern Jiangsu area. Hexia, Yangzhou, Suzhou and Hangzhou were once regarded as four major cities along the Grand Canal. Hexia was rated as the Best Town in Southeast China even at that time.
